Liverpool Biennial Art Festival

Liverpool Biennial Art Festival Liverpool Biennial Art Festival Liverpool Biennial Art Festival

The Client

Liverpool Biennial is the UK’s largest festival of contemporary visual art and is recognised nationally and internationally with each festival running for 10 weeks. There have been 3 Liverpool Biennial festivals to date with a high media profile that increases with each successive festival. The aim of the Liverpool Biennial is to establish and maintain a world class contemporary visual art event in Liverpool that celebrates and encourages excellence, risk, creativity, diversity, participation and debate through partnership, profile building, development of art infrastructure, quality, access and education.

The Brief

Working in partnership with a Manchester-based Advertising Agency, we were challenged to re-brand a city centre area of over 1 square mile, raising awareness of the Liverpool Biennial Festival.

What we did

With a 10-day lead-time from initial site visit to installation, effective forward planning and communication were key factors to success. We carried out a complete city survey involving a full specification of graphics and signage requirements as well as a comprehensive risk assessment and method statement, which were critical when working in busy, public city centre locations. The various graphics solutions included large format PVC banners, window graphics, full colour digital print on rigid board, floor graphics and wall graphics installed in and to the exterior of Liverpool’s museums and galleries.  We also designed and produced over 100 bespoke cube structures measuring 2ft square that were fixed to walls and buildings randomly within Liverpool City Centre for the entire 10-week festival.

Results

By producing and installing bright, eye-catching graphics and signage, we met the objectives of the brief and raised awareness of the festival. The festival attracted over 150,000 more visitors than the previous festival, winning the Best Event Award 2004 at the Mersey Partnership Annual Tourism Awards.
